Phi Phi Island


Phi Phi Islands, Thailand is among the big island of Phuket and the western Andaman Sea coast of the continent. The islands are part of the administrative province of Krabi. Kohh Phi Phi Don meaning “island” in Thai) is the largest island of the group, and is the only island with permanent inhabitants, although the beaches of the second largest island, Kohh Phi Phi Lee (or “Kohh Phi Phi Leh”), are visited by many people, too. The other islands of the group, including Bida Nok, Bida Noi, and Bamboo Island (Kohh Mai Phai), are not much more than the limestone rocks protruding from the sea. Phi Phi Don was initially populated by Muslim fishermen during the years 1940 and later became a coconut plantation. The Thai population of Phi Phi Don remains more than 80% Muslim. The current population, however, if you count workers, especially in the northeast, from the mainland is much more Buddhist these days.

Phi Phi IslandThe islands became widely known when Kohh Phi Phi Leh was used as a place for the 2000 movie The Beach Anglo-American. This attracted criticism, with allegations that the film company had damaged the environment of the island, a film contest to charge those responsible. Premiere of the film was attributed to an increase in tourism to the islands. Phi Phi Leh also houses the ‘Viking Cave’, which is not the soup a thriving bird’s nest industry. Koh Phi Phi was devastated by the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in December 2004, when nearly all the island infrastructure was destroyed. Since 2010, most but not all, of what has been restored.
